New Virginia Majority Newsletter: May 2023

Thank you for your ongoing support of New Virginia Majority! Here are some updates from our organization this month.

May Day March

On May 1st, New Virginia Majority along with SEIU Virginia 512, Loudoun Education Association, Virginia Freedom, Tenants and Workers United, ACE Collaborative, Interfaith BRIDGES, and others joined together to show the collective power of workers. Organizers and members marched through downtown Leesburg and held a rally in front of the Loudoun County Government Center to support Loudoun’s working-class community. This marked a historical moment: the first ever celebration of International Workers Day in Leesburg.

Tenants and Workers United Protest

On May 18th, New Virginia Majority’s hub organization Tenants and Workers United held a protest with community members outside the offices of the Washington Commanders football team. It has been announced that there is a group of investors, including potential minority investor Mitchell Morgan, that wants to buy the team for more than six billion dollars. Mitchell Morgan is also the owner of Morgan Properties, a company that manages apartment complexes in Alexandria where tenants reside in unhealthy living conditions. This news outraged the community because for more than three years residents have tried to reach out to Morgan Properties to address the ignored, unsafe living conditions to no avail.

Norfolk Public Education Campaign

At Norfolk City Council's fiscal 2024 budget hearing, parents of Norfolk Public School students called for the funding of Spanish-English interpreters in schools, noting how the lack of interpretation in schools and in general - hospitals, the DMV, and more - creates barriers in their ability to access services

Loudoun Housing Campaign

New Virginia Majority Loudoun members shared their housing experiences and challenges with Loudoun County Chair Phyllis Randall. They talked about low wages, rising rents, evictions, and the instability of housing for working-class people in the county.

NVM’s 16th Anniversary Pin Campaign
