NVM Supports Virginia Voting Yes on Redistricting Referendum
Yesterday Virginians did their part to stop Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans’ unprecedented power grab. Virginia voters upheld democracy and decided to allow our state legislature to level the playing field by redrawing maps to fight against Trump’s efforts to skew the midterm elections.
The federal administration has repeatedly attacked working class voters and voters of color; since taking office, he has gutted civil rights protections, railed against DEI, unjustly fired thousands of government workers, and increased tax cuts for corporations and wealthy millionaires. In an attempt to gain more power, he has asked Republican controlled states such as Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina to redraw districts as yet another attack meant to drown out the voices of working class voters of color.
“From day one the Trump administration has attempted to rig things in their favor, from our justice system to our economy and more. We are thankful that Virginia has decided to fight back against the Trump administration's attempt to rig the November midterm elections. It's now our job to make sure we send champions to the House of Representatives to curb this administration's attacks on our freedoms, protect our immigrant communities, and fight to bring down inflation and the cost of living," said Sakina Bennett, NVM political director.
Virginians faced the risk of having our voices dampened, but voters decided to restore fairness to upcoming elections. This temporary amendment (the normal redistricting process will resume in 2030) is a crucial step in ensuring that voters in the commonwealth can guard against rigged elections and Congressional rubber stamping of laws, and allows the will of the voters to be heard.
