July 2024 Newsletter

In July, organizers and staff, alongside members, have been actively engaged in addressing community priorities. Recent initiatives include:

New Virginia Majority Loudoun Chapter

  • NVM members and staff spent the last week of July canvassing in Loudoun and Western Fairfax in support of a ceasefire in Gaza. Twenty-five volunteers signed up to knock on doors, asking community members to make calls to Senator Tim Kaine to pressure him to support an immediate ceasefire and stop weapons aid to Israel, and to use our taxpayer funds to invest in our communities at home instead.

Tenants and Workers United (TWU)

  • TWU continued their educational workshops for community members to learn about organizing, power-building, tenants’ rights, and more.
  • Our Summer Youth Institute kicked off in Alexandria where youth are building relationships, learning about local power structures, and developing leadership skills. Onward!

Virginia Student Power Network (VSPN)

  • We have facilitated trainings and developed campaigns with youth leaders across the state with our Freedom School Action Camp. We supported our members and youth with material needs, and campaign development and support. We attended national conferences and international delegations.
  • Continued statewide campaigns and demands around divestment and ending the genocide in Palestine.

New Virginia Majority Policy Team

  • The policy team held a community focus group, in which members from all our hubs and chapters around the state were invited to share their life experiences and policy visions for the future agenda. We thank the forty-five community members and NVM Staff who joined to engage with the policy team in the crafting of our 2025 policy agenda.
  • NVM worked with partners in 2020 and 2021 to help legislatively establish the PIPP program. It is now live for Dominion Energy customers. PIPP assists with making a customer’s monthly payments more affordable on a year-round basis. If a customer has an outstanding balance with Dominion Energy, PIPP helps significantly lower the customer’s monthly bill. Learn more here on Dominion Energy’s Website.
