New Virginia Majority to Hold Press Conference Opposing Anti-Immigrant Policies

Sterling, Va. - On June 12 at 2 p.m., New Virginia Majority (NVM) will hold a press conference along with NVM Solidarity Committee members outside the Executive Office for Immigration Review building (21400 Ridgetop Circle, Sterling, Va.) to demand unbiased treatment and due process rights for immigrant neighbors.

NVM calls on the Loudoun County sheriff to stop all voluntary collaboration with ICE and cease discriminatory policing practices, and opposes the use of local resources to unjustly target immigrant communities. From masked federal agents kidnapping community members outside of courts to over-policing immigrant neighbors at traffic stops, law enforcement is creating a climate of fear throughout Loudoun County.

"Loudoun County Sheriff Michael Chapman’s public anti-immigrant stance undermines the credibility of his statements that the 287(g) agreement is simply a way to keep our community safe from criminals. The actions of the sheriff’s office hinders community collaboration with law enforcement," said Vicki Ellis, NVM solidarity committee member.

"Loudoun residents are witnessing the use of local and federal law enforcement to terrorize our communities rather than keep us safe. These practices undermine trust in government institutions at all levels and make people afraid to leave their homes," said Sofia Saiyed, NVM campaign director.
