September 2024 Newsletter

After wrapping up our People’s Congress events across the state, we’re now focused on getting out the vote with our members. Here is the latest:

New Virginia Majority Richmond Chapter

  • Tenants in Richmond participated in city council meetings with signs to make pressure for our city-wide demands: $9 million for rental and utility assistance; access to financial assistance regardless of immigration status, criminal history, or previous evictions; and better code enforcement to ensure that everyone has access to safe, healthy housing.
  • On September 25th, organizers Amoree and Josue gave a training session on Campaign and Base Building 101 for RVA Rapid Transit’s Mobility University Class.

Richmond City Council Meeting

New Virginia Majority Loudoun Chapter

  • Loudoun families rallied at the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors’ meeting to urge the Board to approve a Guaranteed Income Program. We will continue to push for a basic income program that ensures a better economic future for all Loudoun residents.
  • The New Virginia Tenants Association is organizing at the Parkridge Gardens apartment complex in Herndon over inconsistency in their rent payments, which destabilizes their household budgets and lack of Spanish language accessibility. They sent a letter to the owners, Promark Partners, to request consistent rent and utility charges, transparency in the contract, accessibility of language, and treatment with dignity and respect and talked with Herndon Town Council about their concerns.
  • More than 30 NVM members in Herndon attended town council meetings to support the proposed rezoning of the office complex to create affordable housing. The rezoning of the office complex to convert it into affordable housing for families earning less than 40% AMI is a major step forward in the housing crisis in Herndon.
  • NVM members attended Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Herndon and Sterling, creating displays representing their heritage and talking with community members about our campaigns for affordable housing and free after school programs.

Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Meeting

New Virginia Majority Norfolk Chapter

  • The Norfolk Chapter collaborated with activists and stakeholders to create Norfolk Vision Now, a community platform focused on local priorities. The first forum, focused on housing and energy insecurity, will be held October 1.
  • On September 25, community members gathered for Norfolk's inaugural People's Congress, an event dedicated to celebrating local achievements and strengthening grassroots power. Norfolk member leaders and organizers hosted over 50 attendees, discussing the progress of local housing and public education campaigns. Attendees enjoyed dinner and had the opportunity to connect with elected officials and allies committed to Norfolk's working-class communities.

Tenants and Workers United (TWU)

  • Over 250 members and supporters attended TWU’s General Meeting and “The Bigger We” event, made possible with support from a Welcoming and Belonging grant from ACT for Alexandria. We celebrated our city’s diversity with cultural performances, food from local minority-owned businesses, and building community and people power among neighbors.
  • Our Homework Help program kicked off, providing local youth with tutoring and mentorship to help ensure they have a successful school year!
