New Virginia Majority Statement on Richmond Family Crisis Fund

NVM applauds the Richmond City Council for voting to add $1 million dollars to the Family Crisis Fund as a part of their FY2026 budget, which went into effect July 1. Although there is still much work to be done, this is a significant step towards helping residents throughout the city stay in their homes.

Although the fund was slated to be discontinued, our members spent months pushing to not only ensure that the fund was not discontinued, but to also make sure that funds would be available for the program. The Family Crisis Fund provides financial assistance to residents experiencing unexpected hardship, and is available to all residents, regardless of immigration status. The fund has been a critical resource, assisting nearly 900 households in the past year, with 78% of that aid directly supporting housing costs.

The city must continue to demonstrate through its actions that the housing crisis requires immediate assistance, which the FCF helps with addressing, and we want to continue working with allies to find long-term solutions for our city's housing crisis," said Peter Finn, NVM organizer.
