ICE Out of Loudoun Coalition Press Conference to Protest Loudoun County’s Sheriff's Office Cooperation with ICE
Leesburg, Va. - New Virginia Majority’s (NVM) Loudoun Chapter will co-host a press conference on October 30 at 5:00 p.m. followed by marching in the Leesburg Halloween Parade to launch the ICE Out of Loudoun coalition at the pavilion south of the Demonstration Garden at the Ida Lee Park (60 Ida Lee Drive NW, Leesburg) to protest Loudoun County Sheriff's 287(g) agreement and voluntary cooperation with ICE.
The effect of ICE raids, arrests, detentions, and deportations is impacting Loudoun County, where families are being torn apart, families are unable to meet rent due to arrests, people are hesitating to appear at scheduled court appearances, and children are afraid to go to school.
The ICE Out of Loudoun coalition includes the following organizations: New Virginia Majority, Loudoun4All, Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF), Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), Indivisible NoVA West (INW), and Congregation Action Network, and we demand Loudoun County’s Sheriff's Office end its 287(g) agreement with ICE as well as ending all voluntary cooperation with ICE.
Jude Armstrong, Loudoun4All board member, said “Loudoun County Sheriff Office’s 287(g) agreement with ICE has allowed federal agencies to use our local resources to carry out Trump’s mass deportation agenda on Loudoun’s dime. Our community’s taxpayer dollars and resources need to be invested in helping our neighbors, not harming them.”
Amelia, NVM Loudoun member, said “Since the 287(g) agreement was implemented, the number of sheriff deputies has increased. Maybe they are fulfilling their role of county security, but it makes you feel afraid to catch the attention of a police officer. In an emergency, you don't know whether to speak because the police might communicate with ICE.”
“Sheriff Chapman is terrorizing our immigrant neighbors for political gain. Parents worry that any routine traffic stop could lead to being permanently separated from their children. This is not what safety looks like,” said Sofia Saiyed, Loudoun campaign director at NVM.
