Historic Night for Virginia with Democratic Sweep and an Additional 13 Seats in the House of Delegates

The people of Virginia have spoken. Voters rejected the Republican agenda while voting for expansive change in a statewide sweep. Virginians voted for historic change with the election of Abigail Spanberger as the first woman governor in the state’s history, the election of Ghazala Hashmi as the first AAPI person to hold statewide office in the commonwealth and the first Muslim woman to win a statewide race in the United States, and Jay Jones as the first African American attorney general. Virginians also flipped 13 seats, giving Democrats the largest margin in the House since 1989. This Democratic trifecta gives us the opportunity to create real change for working families and our communities across Virginia.

Our communities–working people, people of color, women, immigrants, LGBTQ people, young people, and more–know what is at stake: a government and a governor who will protect democratic rights and fight for all Virginians. It is imperative that our state government deliver better standards of living for working-class Virginians and address the rising cost of living, affordable housing being out of reach, protect democracy, and access to quality healthcare.

New Virginia Majority organizers knocked on doors and made phone calls to voters across the state, who understood what was at stake. Francisco, a NVM member in Northern Virginia, said, “We need leaders who favor more inclusive policies for everyone, not just a specific group, and our call was to exercise our right to vote for people who will support the most vulnerable groups in the state.”
