DMV Drivers Alliance and ACE Collaborative Celebrate Passage of Pay Transparency Bill

Alexandria, Va. - The DMV Drivers Alliance and ACE (Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement) Collaborative will gather at the New Virginia Majority office at 3801 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Va. on Sunday, May 24 at 11 a.m. to celebrate the passage of the pay transparency bill that was approved by Governor Spanberger during this year's legislative session with drivers and members speaking about how this bill impacts their livelihood.

The pay transparency bill requires companies like Uber and Lyft to be more transparent in the fees that are applied to each trip. Companies also have to provide an itemized receipt to drivers that shows how much the passenger paid for the trip, and how much of that fare goes to the driver (a practice that these companies did when they first operated in Virginia but was taken away once dynamic pricing was introduced).

The bill also sets rules on how these companies handle the deactivation process where a driver can be banned from the Uber or Lyft app without notice or just cause, even from customer reports that turn out to be false.

"The passage of this bill shows that persistent organizing and engagement of Virginia workers can lead to improved working conditions, particularly for working class and Asian communities. These fights may be long, but we've learned that if you don't take the initial step to organize and endure, then work conditions will never improve and may even get worse. Our group of Uber and Lyft drivers spent countless hours engaging with other drivers and meeting with elected officials. This campaign took three years, but we finally got it done," said Mitchell Yangston.
