Statement on 2023 Election Victories

All eyes turned to Virginia on election night as Governor Youngkin and Republicans did everything they could to take complete control of state government, including raising more money than any governor in Virginia’s history, and getting caught purging thousands of voters to suppress the vote.

However, despite their best efforts, the people of Virginia rejected Republicans’ MAGA agenda on abortion, education, taxes, and more with Democrats maintaining control of the state Senate and flipping the House of Delegates, denying Republicans total control of state government.

New Virginia Majority organizers knocked on doors and talked to thousands of voters across the state, and the majority of these voters cared about healthcare access, more investments in public education, gun safety, and making sure that Virginia families don’t have to struggle to make ends meet. Voters were also concerned about rollbacks on abortion access, voting rights, and efforts to combat climate change.

Tonight’s results reflect those conversations, and voters made a decisive choice to disagree with the Republican agenda. With Democrats in control of the Senate and the House of Delegates, Virginians kept in place a brick wall to prevent Republicans from rolling back all the progress that has been made over the last few years on voting rights, healthcare access, gun safety, climate change, and much more.

“We win when we can show a clear way forward and policies that fundamentally change lives for the better. We look forward to working with allies and the legislature to continue to build on our progress,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director.
