New Virginia Majority and Advocacy Groups to Protest Proposed ICE Detention Facility in Hanover

Richmond, Va. - New Virginia Majority and allies will participate in a community rally at the Hanover Board of Supervisors meeting on January 28, 20206 at 5:30 pm opposing the proposal of an ICE detention facility in Hanover (7516 County Complex Road, Hanover, Va. 23069).

The proposed ICE facility would more than double the number of detention center beds in our state, and the proposed detention center expansion is part of a mass deportation agenda that separates families and terrorizes Virginia's immigrant communities. Virginians are coming together to demand that our local and state officials use all the tools at their disposal to stop detention center expansion.

“My family lives in constant fear. It's terrifying to know that a detention center could be just five minutes from my house. Honestly, since I heard that news, I haven't had a moment of peace. My children are super worried. This doesn't just affect Hanover; it affects all of Virginia. What's going to happen to our community?”, said a NVM community member who resides in Hanover.

“As a community organizer for immigrant rights, I feel a responsibility to be here and bring the voice of those who cannot bring it themselves because they are trapped in fear, terrified of even imagining that a detention center could be just a few miles from their home,” said Elena Camacho, NVM organizer.
