Local workers and activist gather to celebrate and uplift each other in uncertain times
Alexandria, VA. -- On Monday, May 1st at 5:00pm ET in Alexandria, local workers joined Tenants and Workers United (TWU) and its sister organization New Virginia Majority (NVM) for a cultural event and community cookout in celebration of International Workers Day, a day set aside to honor workers and the labor movement. Community members enjoyed food, musical performances, and speakers from the across the community and the labor movement.
“I’m honored to join with other working-class families in my community and around the world to celebrate the hard work we invest in this city and this country day in and day out,” said Evelin Urrutia, Executive Director of Tenants and Workers United. “We live together, we work together, we struggle together, and we will continue to fight together and defend one another until we see justice in our communities.”
Tenants and Workers United has organized low-wage workers in the Alexandria area for over 30 years. Their current “Hate Free Virginia” campaign calls on local businesses to condemn the hateful, xenophobic climate that has been on the rise since the presidential election in November.
“We are coming together to celebrate workers, but this is also a moment to reflect on what we have been through and the ideals we want realized in our communities,” said Urrutia. “A lot of community members are afraid and concerned about their future and their family’s safety. So this International Workers’ Day is also a moment to uplift and encourage our community and let them know we will continue to support them and fight for their safety.”

Trabajadores de Alexandria celebraron el día Internacional del Trabajador
Activistas y trabajadores se unieron en una sola voz
Alexandria, VA. -- El lunes 1ro de mayo a las 5:00 pm ET en Alexandria, trabajadores se unieron a la ONG Inquilinos y Trabajadores Unidos (TWU por sus siglas en inglés) y su organización hermana New Virginia Majority (NVM) para un evento cultural en la comunidad en celebración del Día Internacional de los Trabajadores. Día reservado para honrar a los trabajadores y al movimiento obrero. Los asistentes disfrutaron de comida, actuaciones musicales y conferencistas del movimiento obrero.
"Me siento honrada de unirme a otras familias de la clase trabajadora en mi comunidad y en todo el mundo para celebrar el arduo trabajo que invertimos en esta ciudad y este país día a día", dijo Evelin Urrutia, Directora Ejecutiva de Inquilinos y Trabajadores Unidos. "Vivimos juntos, trabajamos juntos, luchamos juntos, y seguiremos luchando juntos y nos defenderemos unos a otros hasta que veamos justicia en nuestras comunidades".
Inquilinos y Trabajadores Unidos ha organizado trabajadores de bajos salarios en el área de Alexandria por más de 30 años. Su campaña actual “Virginia Libre de Odio” (Hate Free Virginia) hace un llamado a las empresas locales para que denuncien el clima de odio y xenofobia que ha ido en aumento desde las elecciones presidenciales de noviembre.
"Nos reunimos para celebrar a los trabajadores, pero este es también un momento para reflexionar sobre lo que hemos vivido y los ideales que queremos que se realicen en nuestras comunidades", dijo Urrutia.
