Community Members to Urge Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to Allocate Funds for Rental Voucher Program
Fairfax, Va. - On April 24 at 6:30 p.m., New Virginia Majority members will rally at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Pkwy) before the budget public hearing to urge the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to allocate $14 million in the budget for a rental voucher program, which would assist approximately 1,200 families in preventing eviction and debt, helping them live a more stable and dignified life.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is currently in the process of approving a budget which would cut millions of dollars in vital services to the working class and immigrant communities in the county. This comes amid a crisis of affordability in the county, particularly when it comes to rising rent costs. More than half of Black and Hispanic renters are paying more than 30% of their income in rent, with some paying as much as 70%.
“I work two jobs, and my wife is a childcare provider, and we still struggle to keep up with the rent. We urgently need a local housing voucher program to support the working class. We want to have the opportunity to see our children grow up in this county,” said TWU member and Fairfax resident Franklin Molina.
“A rental voucher program is incredibly important for our community. This program would provide low-income families with financial assistance to pay for affordable private housing,” said NVM member Otmaro Aguirre.
“We know there are many difficulties in the county at the moment. However, our proposed rental voucher program is a necessary investment in the working class. It will help ensure the county remains an affordable place to live for workers who are the backbone of the local economy,” said NVM community organizer Josif Ezekilov.
