Northern Virginia Organizer

ABOUT US: New Virginia Majority, Virginia’s leading civic engagement organization, builds power in working-class communities of color across the Commonwealth. We organize year-round for racial and economic justice through political education, voter outreach, mobilization, and intensive leadership development around dozens of issues. We fight for a Virginia that is just, democratic and environmentally sustainable.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Applicants must be willing to work hard, learn about and fight for justice for immigrants. You must be able to communicate well in Spanish and be committed to mobilizing people and identifying and developing leaders. Applicants must be able to lead campaigns for  local, state and federal policies that are democratic, just and sustainable. Organizers will strengthen and build existing New Virginia Majority chapters across the region while participating in, among other work, our campaign for driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. You must be able to work with diverse groups of people. Long hours are required. Must possess a driver's license, auto insurance and an automobile. Should have at least 2 years experience as an organizer or union representative.


  • Experience: Two to four years experience in student organizing, community organizing, issue campaigns or advocacy; working on social, racial or economic justice issues and engaging communities of color. Experience organizinglarge scale voter engagement campaigns and canvassing is preferred.

  • Knowledge: Applicants familiar with VAN or votebuilder are strongly preferred. Must be able to speak spanish fluently (written fluency is preferred).

  • Skills:  Must be flexible, creative and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility. Must be able to work well independently with limited direct supervision. Ties to the community are a strong plus.

  • Conditions: Background and commitment to social justice work and demonstration of strong personal commitment to New Virginia Majority’s mission and values. Long/irregular hours and travel possible, including evenings and weekends. A driver’s license and access to a car are required.


  • Recruit members through house visits and direct contact

  • Organize and sustain chapters

  • Mobilize members to campaign events, actions and other organizational activities

  • Co-develop and implement local, state, and national campaigns

  • Conduct political education training for  members and leaders

  • Maintain a database documenting work

  • Support leaders by executing tactics and facilitating meetings

  • Participate in building campaign coalitions and key relationships with campaign-related allies

  • Coordinate with appropriate staff for communications, fundraising and other group activities

Position Type:

Full-time/40 hours per week

Salary and Benefits:

Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, as well as monthly phone and transportation allowances.
